How to Build Backlinks Safely in 2020 (Get Link Step by Step)

11 Ways to Build Backlinks Safely on Your Blog or Website

Create backlinks securely with these 11 battle-tested backlink strategies for 2020

How to build backlinks?

If you've been in the SEO game for a certain amount of time, you've probably already asked yourself this question.

If not, you absolutely should.

Because backlinks are one of Google's two main ranking factors.

And in this article, I'll show you how to build backlinks safely and 11 of my "working" and "unsaturated" "backing" strategies for 2020.

Did I tell you that they work like a charm?

I don't need … I will share live examples and tips so you can replicate them for your website.

What is a backlink?

Shameless plug:

Click on the image above to get $50 bonus and start buying your backlinks!

A backlink is a link that a website directs to your website in an attempt to reference or cite your website (when it comes to a link to the home page) or its content (any specific article/page).

Put simply, a backlink is a vote of confidence from site A to site B.

This further helps visitors to site A (and search engines) discover site B (arguably something more valuable or content that compliments site A's content) that gives a ranking boost for site B.

What is the importance of backlinks in SEO?

If you're here looking for how to create backlinks, I'm sure you already know the importance.

But, in case you didn't know…

Backlinks, as I said, are votes from other websites to your website that sends a signal to search engines that your content is valuable.

The more website authority links to you, the more power of the link and likewise the greater the boost you get in your rankings.

How backlinks work in SEO

Put simply, the more votes your site gets, the more authority it gets in search engine ranking pages.

Which means higher rankings.

And higher rankings = more traffic = more visitors = more sales.

You get math, don't you?

Speaking of math, let's get into the math of building backlinks safely, or how to create backlinks that help you improve your rankings.

1. Leverage your content to get backlinks

While there are thousands of ways to create backlinks, the one tactic that will always work, regardless of the industry or niche you blog in, is leveraging your content to get backlinks.

Creating high-quality content that amazes your audience is the best way to earn backlinks naturally.

Engaging content is not only shared like crazy, but is captured by influencers, helping you with increased exposure for hookups.

In addition, content that has proven effective (with social shares/influencer shoutouts, etc.) They are easily accepted when you launch or reach links.

Speaking of successful content, the now obvious question is…

Use the SkyScraper 2.0 technique Every backlink guru will tell you to use the Skyscraper technique if you want to get more links.

Heck!Even Brian Dean (the fantastic "crush" of every SEO and the one who coined and introduced both techniques) suggests something similar.

How to build backlinks using the Skyscraper technique

But what's the problem, you ask?

With the Skyscraper technique, Brian agrees, traffic will vanish sooner or later, but with the Skyscraper 2.0 technique your leaderboards will remain intact forever (or at least until you keep it updated).

So, more chances to get backlinks from the same content.

So, what is the technique of Skyscraper 2.0?

In essence, the technique of Skyscraper 2.0 is based on the creation of 10x content (better than all the top 10 ranking pages), but also on the user's attention to that query term.

Since then, user intent is a very important criterion for Google (so that the most relevant result can emerge at the top) articles with the Skyscraper 1.0 technique (which are missing to satisfy user intent) tend to accumulate in traffic and rankings over time.

Therefore, I would advise you to follow the safest and best path to long-term results.

Writing epic content takes time and resources, and it's worth it… But that's only 50% of the work done.

The next 50% would be content promotion.

The next obvious step would be to promote your article so that it gets as much attention as it should.

You can follow this guide on how to promote your blog post effectively and leverage influencer marketing to make the backlink acquisition process faster than before.

2. Get backlinks through infographics

Building links with infographics has always been one with a profitable ROI.

Before leaving, quarrel …

… that infographics were connecting magnets in the past and that they are now dead… Look at this!

How to build backlinks through infographics

These numbers are quite interesting, but what is even more interesting is the authority of these reference domains.

See the authority to report backlink domains earned from this single infographic

Mind-blowing, isn't it?

Well, that's not one in a million cases of successful link building with infographics…

in fact I did not choose to show that kind of infographic (they exist with some backlinks over 10K) because those are not easily replicable and take time (if you can do it, trust me there is nothing better than this!).

13 reasons for Neoman backlink analysis

Now the question arises …

How do you create an infographic and how to get backlinks to it?

1 Look carefully for your infographic idea:

What matters most in making an infographic viral the topic or topic on which it is based.

In the 13 reasons why your brain craves the infographic example above, the topic hit the right chord because infographics are always the most consumable information format. And that piece provided research-backed suggestions that explain why.

You can use tools like Google Trends to find what's trending right now or what the audience's interest on your topic will be like over the next 12-14 months.

Double validate your infographic idea with tools like Buzzsumo to see if those topics are popular (social cues are a good indicator).

There is no point in wasting your resources on something that does not generate any interest.

Pro tip: Make sure you choose a topic that has been trending well for quite some time (it will help you get your infographic to be chosen easily when you launch) and will be trending for at least a year after publication.

Because outreach takes time and if you select a short-lived trend, it will be difficult for you to scale your backlink after a certain level because no one will likely be interested in posting content in that topic.

Aside from the hard work you put into it, a good infographic could cost you as much as $500 – $1000 and you won't want your hard work to stabilize with minimal results.

2 Outsource your infographic from experts

Well, the number one reason why people complain that infographics don't work is creating low-quality ones.I'm guilty of this too (check this and this to get an idea of how not to create an infographic).

Unless you have really good skills, I recommend hiring professionals to do it for you.

3 Outreach to make it published / syndicated

If you want to quickly create SEO friendly backlinks for your infographics, you need to contact the brands that are already doing so.

Target high-authority publishers to instantly get elevated DA backlinks. These are the backlinks that will give you a strong boost in the rankings.

Another advantage of this is that the recipient base of these blogs will be incorporated or shared by yourself offering plenty of medium quality backlinks without extra work.

How to get the pitch of the accepted link?

  1. Create a relationship first (with the publisher or blog owner)
  2. Offer something that reduces their efforts to publish the piece (such as a personalized introduction, blog post, etc.).
  3. What's inside for them?Make an effort to show what you bring to the table. You can say something like, "I'll return the favor and bring you links mentioning this article in my future guest posts."
  4. Don't use a generic disclosure template, customize it to be accepted more quickly.

3. HARO: How did I get two backlinks Dofollow High DR 87

Have you ever wanted to get high-quality backlinks for free?

And I'm not talking about your DA30 or DA 40 medium backlinks…

Am I talking about creating backlinks for your site from high authority sites with DA 70 and later?

Yes, those like backlinks to Forbes, Tech Crunch, Business Insider, The New York Times etc. Does it seem impossible?

Well….In reality, "nothing is impossible"!

And you don't have to pay up to $5000 for those author links on those sites.

I'll show you how I do it for free and tips to replicate my process.

HARO or Help a journalist get out is the tool I use to get this type of authoritative backlinks for free.

HARO is an amazing platform that connects publishers and publishers (people who need information and quotes for their articles) with bloggers (or literally anyone who can provide related information) with each other.

And it doesn't cost a penny.

HARO sends you periodic emails (typically 3 daily, Monday to Friday) which are lists of a series of questions categorized into topics such as health, business, general etc. You can also get detailed information about the qualifications needed to answer such questions (usually nothing crucial).

You will be informed and your pitch will be selected.

This is exactly how I got two powerful backlinks Ahrefs DR (domain rating) 87 or DA 82.

How I got DA 82 backlinks using HARO (case study)
How I got DA 82 backlinks using HARO (case study)

You can replicate it for your sites too!

And here is the exact process I followed…

Tips for Succeeding with HARO for Backlinks:Here are some tips for getting more SEO friendly and high-authority backlinks with HARO:

  1. Read all emails from HARO: Read all emails you receive daily, even in other sections (queries are grouped into sections but sometimes also appear in other sections, as an SEO topic may appear in the general section)
  2. Accept your tone: Respond convincingly and professionally with proof of backing up what you say (sources, quotes, etc.) And provide them with blows to the head, links to the site etc. To avoid the possibility of rejection.
  3. Respond quickly: Because it reaches a global audience, be sure to respond within a couple of hours. This will maximize your chances of being accepted.
  4. Keep trying: NOT be satisfied with some answers, be sure to answer whenever you know. It's worth getting a DR 87 (or similar backlink) although you need to write 50 answers for it.
  5. Build good relationships with PR and journalists: If you see a second question from a journalist, be sure to let them know how much you liked the article (regardless of whether your tone was accepted or not). These simple things will make you a familiar face in their inboxes and your shots will stand out.
  6. Try shameless plugins: Add links to relevant pages/posts on your blog within your blurb.Sometimes the whole tone is rejected, other times you will find that the PR just removed the link and posted your blurb (you have a link in your author bio, so that's fine). But other times, as in the HARO case study above, I got 2 backlinks (one inside the blurb and another in the author's bio). So, don't hesitate to double your chances of getting links from individual steps.

4. Use the site's wedding technique

The wedding technique on the site has been around for quite some time, but it's becoming increasingly popular these days.

So, what is this site merging technique to get links?

The technique of marriage on the site (a term I coined) is when you merge two (niche similar) sites together.

You've seen Neil Patel do it not once but many times… including many other high-profile SEOs and bloggers.

Brian Dean also married his site to PointBlankSEO (by Jon Cooper) with Backlinko.

Email on the merger between Backlinko and PointBlankSEO
Email on the merger between Backlinko and PointBlankSEO

And the result?

How to build high backlink from with the wedding technique on the site

He had all these lucrative 301 links redirected to relevant articles on his blog.

Now let me make one thing clear.

Brian Dean has no shortage of inbound organic backlinks from high-authority sites, and PointBlankSEO didn't have decent traffic numbers, but getting some extra links from a site highly isn't a bad deal, is it?

I've seen The Site Marriage Technique applied by many bloggers but I wouldn't want to reveal names or wish their sites to attract attention (I shared them because buyers/sellers were publicly very explicit about their deal).

Tips for finding sites to merge with your site:

  1. Look around in your niche: check out competing sites that are idle.Keep an eye out for comments on your site (old articles may contain comments from site owners that are no longer maintained).
  2. Keep an eye out for sites like Flippa, Empire Flippers
  3. Ask: You can openly ask in your network (like Facebook or Twitter) to see if someone is interested in selling a site that no longer wants to grow.

5. Guest Post with link highlighting method

Guest posting has always been a good way to create backlinks without spamming. And this is still one of my favorite ways to get some contextual backlinks directly from sites in your niche.

Guest posting tends to be slower (you have to write the content yourself or outsource it), you have to be on top of your game (unless your step is something more than surprising, you won't be approved), and it's not scalable like other techniques mentioned in this article.

That said, if you want to get niche-relevant backlinks without shelling out a lot of money, guest posting isn't a bad idea.

How to maximize link flow and authority flow from guest post links?

1. Always try to insert your link within the content: the author's biographical links don't carry much link juice nor are they tempting enough to get clicks.

2. Use the link highlighting method: hundreds of cups of coffee and some good guest items Afterwards, I realized that no one clicks on a link (your link on the guest article) because it looks like just another internal link.

At that time I thought it was necessary to create backlinks in guest posts that call users to click on them.

Here's an example

Connect the highlighting method in guest posts to get more traffic and link juice

In the previous guest post, I strategically placed the link for my guest post in a separate section. That paragraph and the next talk about the article to which the link directs and thus maximizing the CTR.

You can do something similar, just make sure:

  • You have something to show (any case study or success/failure you've achieved with your blog)
  • Make sure it's in line with the topic of your guest post and doesn't look beyond promotion.

6. How to Get High DA Backlinks from Stock Photo Sites

No, I'm not talking about profile links.

I'm talking about a little-known way of getting natural backlinks by exploiting stock photos.

The idea is …

Gain highly authoritative backlinks via image attributions.

This is a perfect example of strategic link building where you upload some images to free stock image sites like, Flickr etc. The reason for uploading it to stock photo sites instead of a section of your blog is to take advantage of the audience size of those sites.

The next step is to clarify in the terms of use section that if someone were to use those images they should simply credit the author with a link to a website (it could be a homepage or a specific link).

Like all other backlink strategies, here's a live example of someone doing it successfully.

You can see that they got coveted linkbacks from VentureBeat, GigaOm, DailyDot, and more.

How to get backlinks by creating linkable resources

Pro tip: Since we have no control over the niche of the blog/website that will pick up your image, this backlink tactic may render some links irrelevant. For this reason, be sure to upload images related to your niche so that they are collected from relevant sites.

7. Create linkable resources to get industry-specific backlinks

Wondering how to get backlinks from authority sites? The technique of connectable resources is the way to go!

If you're looking for some quick links from a highly relevant industry, this should be your backlink tactic.

What you need to do in this is to create resources that people will want to refer to and then provide you with backlinks.

Here's an example Stone Temple used its resources to create an "original" piece of research on using Mobile vs Desktop.

And take a look at the number of backlinks it has gained over time!

How to earn backlinks by creating linkable resources

Not just Stone Temple, SEMrush did something similar for their featured snippet study.

How to get backlinks by creating linkable resources

By now they too have gained a fair number of connections.

But this is not possible for bloggers, you could argue …

I understand.I also understand that this is not a scalable backlink strategy for most niches, but in case you have resources you should try.

Also, if you see that creating linkable resources won't cost you more than buying backlinks (from probably bad sites or PBNs).

Imagine the amount you would spend to get mediocre links from SEO agencies and compare that to getting highly targeted industry-specific backlinks from authority sites.

Needless to say, links earned from linkable resources will always be the best white hat backlinks you can ever get.

If you're wondering how to create backlinks for new websites, linkable link building assets is a big winner!

Watch SparkToro's Rand Fishkin use this strategy to grab media attention and mention his new blog of the same name.

how to create backlinks for the new website
Note: Creating this type of link resource is not at all simple and convenient. But, if you're someone who invests 4 figures per month in buying backlinks or for white-hat link building services, you might want to invest that amount to partner with a research firm to create link assets that earn you high-quality backlinks naturally.

8. Link Reclamation

Retrieving links is a good way to get links from unrelated mentions of you or your website on the web.

This is a very common strategy to build backlinks safely.

I recommend this approach to creating backlinks because these backlinks are unique to you and your brand, it will be difficult for your competitors to replicate them.

Because you've received mentions on the web because of your merits or things that are unique to you, those links can hardly be replicated by your competitors as they would for your link acquisitions from guest posting or using the skyscraper technique.

Here is a step-by-step guide to creating backlinks using the link recovery strategy.

9. Create your own CBN White Hat to get backlinks

If you want to create SEO-friendly white hat backlinks, getting links from private blog networks (PBNs) is a big no-no. In that case, an alternative to the white hat to PBNs is required.

Introducing CBN (Contributor Blog Networks)!

CBN (it's a term coined by me) or contributor blog networks when you contribute to high-profile blogs and multimedia sites and for a network of such sites for your blog.

Many big names like Larry Kim, Zac Jhonson, regularly contribute to high-profile mega sites like Inc, Search Engine Journal , HubSpot etc. When you enter these sites you get much more than just a link link.

This is followed by branding, traffic, leads, social proofs. But for this specific article, we will focus only on backlinks.

Getting into these media sites might not be easy but you don't expect 70+ backlinks and tons of hassle-free traffic, do you?

In addition, the backlinks of these sites are highly authoritative. Here's mine from The Next Web.

How to create backlinks with contributor accounts

Advice from the professional: Don't just assist yourself in one-time appearances. This will ruin the idea of building a CBN. Instead, contribute to these sites regularly so that you have a better chance of placing your links. This leads to branding and gives you additional links.

For example, my friend Ryan Biddulph earned backlinks as mentions from sites like Virgin, Fox News, Forbes to name a few.Because?Because Ryan is everywhere. He has seen in almost every blog and has published over 100 eBooks that have definitely helped him get into these sites.

Having a network of private contributor blogs is more powerful and profitable than having a PBN because in PBNs you worry about all the hassles (such as hosting, site maintenance, content, etc.).

Apart from that, PBNs can never approach CBNs because CBNs are real sites with real traffic and authority. Also, PBNs aren't in Google's good books, anyway.

10. Get editorial backlinks using this technique

Editorial backlinks are links that you naturally get from other websites.

These links are often the best way to get backlinks and differ from the other link-building tactics on this list because, here, you get links or mentions naturally from others in your industry.

These are the types of links you should point to.

How to get editorial backlinks?

  • Write epic stuff: still use the skyscraper technique I described above
  • Build a brand so everyone knows about you, your content, and the work you do.
  • Build relationships: I got editorial backlinks from some really good sites just because the authors/contributors had known me for years and loved my work.

11. Build a tool or resource to get resource backlinks

Another interesting way to get editorial backlinks safely is to create a tool or cheat sheet that solves users' problems.

In addition to editorial backlinks, you can use your tools to launch links from resource pages.

The tools are easier to place as backlinks to the resource page and even from educational sites that offer .edu backlinks for free.

This is a good way to create backlinks for Amazon's niche sites since no one would easily link to such sites.
