How to build a VPN – Protecting yourself on the web – Leadership 2020

In our connected world, everything you do online can be traced back to you.Despite the false sense of anonymity offered by screen names and private browsing sessions, your information is still accessible to numerous third parties.Whenever you connect to the web, your activities and data can be viewed by your internet service provider, websites you're visiting, surveillance programs, and even hackers.

VPNs are a great way to restore your privacy and stay safe on the web.Virtual private networks work to encrypt your data, hiding it from prying eyes and providing you with true anonymity. In the past, VPN services were reserved only for tech-savvy users and large enterprises.Today they are accessible to anyone.

Before you can start browsing with peace of mind, you'll need to establish your VPN connection. This can be done on many different devices, ensuring that all your activities are protected wherever you go.Check out our step-by-step guides below to set up a VPN on your computer or mobile device.

VPN Basics

What is a VPN? Virtual private networks operate according to very simple principles. When you connect to the internet normally, your device is communicating with another server that hosts the website you're trying to visit.Along the way, your IP address is logged and your data is vulnerable to attacks.

With a VPN, your connection goes through a secure tunnel to be encrypted. This effectively hides your identity and makes it nearly impossible for hackers to understand your data.

Using a VPN has many advantages. The biggest is online security. If you regularly use public Wi-Fi networks, you're at risk of stealing your information, falling victim to malware, and more.Public Internet connections are completely open to anyone. As a result, you have to worry more about security threats than when accessing your password-protected network.

Even still, home networks have their vulnerabilities.A VPN service protects you from these problems by keeping your personal IP address hidden as well.As your data passes through the VPN, it takes on the provider's address.Everything you do after going through that tunnel is a secret, even to your ISP.

This is especially useful if you live in a country with strict censorship laws. You can easily select a server location other than your country to gain access to content you wouldn't normally be able to view. This applies to blocked sites and streaming platforms like Netflix. While the extra hurdles going through your connection often lead to connection speeds that aren't as fast as you're used to, the peace of mind and protection offered by a VPN is worth the sacrifice.
